Endovascular Surgery

Endovascular Specialists Guarantee a High Level of Medical Expertise

In Chief Physician Dr Rudolf Müller, the Head of the Euregio Vascular Centre, and Senior Physician Dr Peter Wallraff, the Clinic for Vascular Surgery and Angiology at the St. Antonius Hospital, Eschweiler, has two recognised endovascular specialists at its disposal.

Endovascular surgery, which is still a very new speciality, comprises treatment of various diseases of the arteries and less frequently those of the veins through the blood vessels themselves. A flexible, mesh-like and small metal tubular device, known as a stent, for example, is used to improve blood flow. Other types of blood vessel supports are sheathed with a vascular prosthesis and can, for example, be implanted in a bulge in an artery, also known as an aneurysm, thereby avoiding a fatal tearing of the diseased aorta.

Catheters and balloon catheters are also specifically used for dilation of the vessels and help to improve blood flow and prevent vascular occlusion. Use of the minimally invasive methods used in endovascular surgery can enable many patients to avoid the necessity of major surgical intervention. Due to the fact that endovascular procedures of this kind often need to be combined with small surgical interventions, endovascular surgery specialists require a high degree of professional competence. These specialists not only have many years of experience in all fields of vascular surgery, but have also shown their comprehensive skills in interventional surgery by successfully completing their specialist training in accordance with the strict criteria of the DGG, the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Angiology.

Endovascular surgery performed by specialists also has many advantages for the patient. One of the benefits is that the treatment team no longer needs to be replaced during a vascular surgical operation, which not only saves time but is also a further hallmark of our high level of patient safety.
