Treatment of malignant diseases requires both rapid establishment of a diagnosis and optimum cooperation between different specialist medical departments. The cancer specialist (oncologist/haematologist) acts as a kind of ‘pilot’" in this instance, having to coordinate both optimally effective diagnostics and treatment. Specialists from all over Germany are often involved in this process, which frequently takes up valuable time.

The procedure known as teleoncology allows direct computer-aided networking of the Clinic for Haematology and Oncology with other centres (specialised laboratories and various university clinics), permitting joint expert analysis of tissue samples under a microscope (telemicroscopy) live by video conference.

A telemicroscopy system consists of a high-quality microscope, a digital colour camera adapted for cytomorphology, a PC with specialised image documentation software and a conference module. This makes it possible to avoid sending samples to a 2nd or 3rd institute, thus gaining valuable time before treatment is begun. Furthermore, the system also allows direct joint assessment of X-ray images in order to plan optimum surgical procedures.

Telemicroscopy enables the clinic to participate in the "Professional Network for Acute and Chronic Leukaemia" that is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The objective of this network is to create a cooperative leukaemia network that is an international leader for improving population-related treatment and health-related research in acute and chronic forms of leukaemia.

This system also provides the latest prerequisites for medical training by enabling findings to be discussed and expertly appraised live in conjunction with other experts.
