Angiology

Arterial disease is mainly the result of arteriosclerosis (calcification of the arteries), which often only becomes noticeable in old age. The increasing life expectancy in Germany means that the need for angiological evaluation and treatment is constantly on the increase.

Angiology, i.e. vascular medicine, not only deals with the diseases of the:

  • Arterial blood vessels (intermittent claudication, stroke and other circulatory disorders of the brain and aneurismal disease), but also with disorders
  • Of the venous blood vessels (for example in the form of varicose veins, venous thromboses and inflammation) and of the
  • Lymph vessel system (lymphoedema).

As an interdisciplinary field, we closely collaborate with other specialists, primarily those involved in vascular surgery and radiology.

At the St.-Antonius-Hospital in Eschweiler, each vascular patient is consulted and treated by both a vascular surgeon and an angiologist within the Euregio Vascular Centre, which focuses on selecting gentle diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in line with medical guidelines.

Range of Services

  • Basic assessment of the majority of angiological problems using comprehensive and non-invasive ultrasound diagnostics (Duplex sonography) of the entire arterial and venous vascular system, from the arteries supplying the brain through to varicose veins
  • Imaging of the smallest vessels (capillaries) and their function using light reflection rheography and capillary microscopy, e.g. circulatory disorders in the hands and feet (Raynaud's syndrome)
  • Consultation regarding and treatment of lymphatic disorders, e.g. chronic (lipo)lymphoedema
  • Assessment and treatment of chronic wounds, particularly if diabetes mellitus is present
  • Assessment of fistula problems in dialysis patients
  • Diagnosis of possible contributing factors such as coagulation disorders
  • Vascular imaging by means of CT or MR angiography in addition to contrast medium imaging (DSA) by the Radiology Department
  • Endovascular treatment of circulatory disorders (incl. aorta, renal arteries, mesenterial vessels, carotids and dialysis fistulas)
  • CT-guided sympathicolysis by the Radiology Department
